I dunno why I thought it was going to be a MASSIVE HD rip, but it's not bad!

Here's a side-by-side of one random shot. The digitized VHS tape is on the left. The current-best-version by the MK Restoration Project is on the right (the with logo in the corner).

I don't know how much editing the MK Restoration Project did, because obviously his looks way more colour-corrected, and I'm pretty confident you could do the same thing to the VHS tapes. :) But the image on the right looks sharper when you look at her necklace, for example.

The VHS tapes also look wider, for some reason? Not in a bad way, but if you look at the window on the side and count the number lines, you'll see the Restoration Project one is slightly zoomed in. So I actually think the VHS tapes have the fuller picture!

What I need to do is find one of the really rough episodes on YouTube and compare it to one of the episodes I have.

 

Idk why I wrote this so matter-of-factually - i have been losing my mind with anxiety right up until I started taking a look at the quality, and then I was suddenly all business.

Part 2

Again, I feel like the colour can be edited to look like the one on the right. It's the sharpness I'm looking for. Pausing it makes it look annoying, but they're both paused so it's even for them both. Looking at them, it seems like the VHS tape is sharper when I look at Angus' vest. It's really hard not to get distracted by how much richer the image is, but again, you can literally adjust the image so stooooop, Tartra >:(

I don't know if you'd want to do a wholesale replacement of the Super recordings with these VHS tapes, but there's definitely potential to replace some of these scenes. :)

 

You're gonna have to trust me 'cause it's paused again, but the intro sequence from Episode 32 is crystal fucking clear <3 AND CHECK THIS SHIT OUT

THIS is the difference in quality I was looking for!!! VHS on the left, blurry MK Restoration on the right - IT LIIIIIIIVES!!! LOOK AT THIS SHIT - THIS IS WAY BETTER <3 <3 <3 <3

Then there are ones where you can't completely tell, but yes, the VHS tape is still sharper in its details. :)

I kinda feel like it's copium, but again, I can see the details better in the VHS version. The MK Restoration version is brighter, maybe with a sharper contrast, but I feel like I can see more of the individual pieces of the metal armor and the stone wall.

And some other improvements, even among the MK Restoration version where it looks like it was taken from the only home release tape ever made in English (on the right; my VHS is on the left again):

 

Honestly, the MK Restoration Project's version of episode 1 is so unbelievably crisp. I don't think it needs any help; it's on the right, mine's on the left.

It's not the colour; the MK Restoration one is just legitimately better. :) Look at it!

One of these men is about to cry if Cathbad doesn't let him go kill himself right now. The other one's just mildly upset. MK Restoration nailed it <3

 

But beyond that, I'm seeing so much more detail in the Italian version when we're back to comparing the TV recordings on the right with the VHS tapes on the left <3

I can see the thatching instead of just a blur of brown, and even though the colour's more dull, the picture is clearer.

So even when it's not night and day, there are improvements in the picture!

 

I have no idea how video editing works, but I'm going to take one single solitary crack at trying to clean up the colouring.

If Tumblr's gif makers can do it, so can I.
