Visual Accoutrements and Accessories
This is stuff around the show (i.e. how it was produced), but not the show itself. If you're a Reddit nerd, this is what you're looking for. If you're a Tumblr geek, let me escort you back to your natural habitat.
Is this cool? Yes. I'll link to it elsewhere if it spawns some ideas for me. But some of it I can't interact with, 'cause of my fully self-imposed "No spoilers on what the actors are like" rule. I learned that with Maroon 5. It was one of my favourite bands through elementary and high school (shut up), and I made it all the way through university without knowing what the main guy looked like, since I don't watch music videos. And then The fucking Voice aired and I couldn't get away from the ads. Why'd I avoid it? Wasn't actively trying. But since I happened to never encounter Adam Levine's face before that, it freed me up to picture Daffy Duck. I was having a great time. I love Daffy Duck.
So it's the same deal here: as badly curious as I am about whether that's Vincent Walsh's real hair, I do not want to spoil the fun of guessing by having a bonus feature show me what he looked like out of costume. I CAN FIGURE IT OUT LIKE A BIG GIRL, and the only other way I'm willing to hear the answer now is if the guy himself emails me saying, "Yeah, that was my hair. (or was it? why would they pay for a wig? that was obviously lochlann o'mearain's hair, so why not hire another guy with long hair? but the actress for maeve almost definitely had a wig, so obviously they were riding the wig train, and his hair looked the same on the first episode and the last while lochlann o'mearain had some sort of lion's mane thing happening, but maybe vincent walsh just got it cut more often I DEMAND TO LIVE IN A PLAUSIBLE IT-COULD-GO-EITHER-WAY)"
(i'll get to it eventually, i'm not a weirdo, i'm just having fun seeing how long i can dodge learning facts :D)
Anyway! Here's the stuff the folks on /r/MysticKnights were so incredible at finding.
Interview with Joel Barkow
Awesome article interviewing one of the original writers for the show. :D He talks about some the early plans they had for season two, and most importantly reveals that there'd only been an order for fifteen episodes. I've got thoughts on that, so I'll put them together eventually.
Dan's Toku Rants
Kitty's the best. I don't know how she finds this stuff. She says she's really good at searching for it online, but she has yet to teach me her magical ways. :P
She also explains it best on the subreddit, but the tl;dr is that this is a link to a Google Drive with a series of interviews, and episode 245 was with Robert Hughes (the show's producer), and 288 was with Lochlann O'Mearain (the man, the myth, the potato butcherer).
Now someday, when I have more time, I'm gonna relisten to the one with Robert Hughes, 'cause there was a lot of eye-(ear?)-opening details and nuggets fed to us.
As for the one with Lochlann O'Mearain? Nope. Tell me if it's got anything good, and if someone wants to write me a transcript, I'll read it, but this is Daffy-Duck-as-Adam-Levine territory. LET'S SEE HOW LONG WE CAN GO!
I've got both downloaded, though, as a back-up. :3
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog - A Legend in the Making (Behind the Scenes)
I feel like everyone's pretty much seen this, since it comes with the Mystic Knights Restoration Project file and it's on YouTube, but Kitty posted it to the sub, so I'm happy to give her a shout-out for it. :D
Everyone except me, 'cause it's another Daffy-Duck-Do-Not-Cross line. >:(
Anyway, I think it's a twenty-three minute featurette of how they made the show. It apparently aired before the show itself started! Which - like, dick move, FoxKids, ruining the magic right out of the gate. But it's definitely something you'd wanna put on a home release DVD - if they had one.
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog Electronic Press Kit - Part 1/2
Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog Electronic Press Kit - Part 2/2
Another Daffy Duck line, but HOLY SHIT, I have no idea how Kitty found this at all! According to her post, this was separate from the behind-the-scenes featurette, and it wasn't originally supposed to be public! The uploader on YouTube says the show's under Disney, btw, so who knows? Maybe it is! Anyway - this has more interviews with the cast. :D Super cool! I would assume! You tell me!
The Patents
Official Gazette of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Trademarks 1999-09-28: Vol 1226 Iss 4
On one hand, I feel like I've dug too deep. But on the other, "snow saucers and snowboards"? "Christmas tree ornaments"? "Pet toys"? Saban was doing a 'just-in-case' for a lot of shit. (they never locked down the easter market, the fools)
It's also just really funny reading a seemingly standalone sentence/introduction/slogan that goes, "THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE TERM "TIR NA NOG" IS "LAND OF YOUTH." Wild - did you ask the Irish if they considered that a 'term'? So clinical, so creepy, so first-use-in-February-10-1998.
Official Gazette of the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Trademarks 2000-02-08: Vol 1231 Iss 2
The one above this was for September 1999, talking about stuff they've been using since February 1998. But this patent - which is just for "Mystic Knights," not the full "Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog" name (which makes sense, because the second season was gonna be renamed to remove the Tir Na Nog part anyway) - is for February 8, 2000. Which, to clarify, is after the show was already cancelled.
I mean, the show was still airing in February 2002. I'm not saying they didn't need a patent. I'm saying it's sending mixed messages to have cancelled the books and cancelled the show, only to slide in a last-minute patent for the franchise name's key prefix for a season that never finished production.
The Magazines
Fox Kids Magazine - Fall 1998
Fox Kids Magazine - Winter 1998 and Spring 1999
Fox Kids Magazine - Summer 1999
This is beyond just giving credit to ScaryKitty. These are actually from her own personal, physical collection! I have no idea how she got them - other than, I'm assuming, the old fashioned way of buying them when they came out. :D Which blows me away even more, because holy shit, she kept them!! And they're in such gorgeous, clear quality!
What an absolute set of treasures. These are pics I haven't seen anywhere else, so without these scans, they're basically lost to time forever. Kitty is a beast and I am thrilled by that. What an absolute MVP, and so generous to have shared this!
Kidscreen Magazine February, 1999 - Volume 4 - Issue 2
Whoa! I'm finding all kinds of stuff now! :D I'll just put the excerpt here since there's not a ton in the overall 'zine, but it's good stuff.
... Kind of hilarious that the Spaghettios campaign went ahead. RIP Battle Fury - which had apparently started filming in February 1999.
Btw, the toys that Bandai were working on were in the pictures from the Henshin Grid site.
90s Nickelodeon Magazine Lot
This is a whole collection of Nickelodeon magazines. There's a full ad for the show on page 13, and another little mention of it on page 34. Normally I'd just screenshot it for you, but uhhhh... I got lazy and I don't want to uwu
Gamefan Vol 6 Issue 05
But I'll you what, my friend: to date, that's the best argument I have for the origin of that "Mystic Knight of Death" rumour.
The CD
Fox Kids Hits
... I can't 100% say what this is. It looks like a CD with a booklet that gives a summary of the show on one of the pages. The summary is in German, but the rest of the CD - and the music - are all in English. Idk - it's some general promo thing for all of Fox Kids' shows, and Mystic Knights happened to be one of the ones mentioned in the booklet. :P
